Examination Format for Physics

How will students be tested on the Physics papers?

One of the key areas of the A Level Physics syllabus is the scheme of assessment, in which students are required to complete a set of papers within a given timeframe. Each of these papers contains specific types of questions that assesses the ability of students to apply their Physics knowledge effectively.

H2 Physics (9749) Exam Format

Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions

For students taking the H2 Physics, they are required to complete four papers. Paper 1 consists of 30 multiple choice questions that are to be completed within 1 hour. Paper 1 occupies 15% of the overall grade.

Paper 2: Structured Questions

Paper 2 comprises of structured questions that require students to integrate knowledge based on their understanding of the A Level Physics syllabus. Within this paper, students will be tasked to attempt data-based questions, which contain a given set of information that they have to analyze. Paper 2 is to be completed within 2 hours. It occupies 30% of the overall grade.

Paper 3: Long Structured Questions

Paper 3 contains the longer structured questions that involved the integration of topics. The duration for Paper 3 is 2 hours and it occupies 35% of the overall grade.

Paper 4: Practical Assessment

Paper 4 is also known as the practical assessment. It assesses the skills of students, in terms of planning, manipulation, measurement and observation, presentation of data, analysis and evaluation. Students are given 2 hour 30 minutes to complete the assessment, which occupies 20% of the overall grade.

H1 Physics (8866) Exam Format

For students taking H1 Physics, they are expected to complete two papers.

Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions

Paper 1 comprises of 30 multiple choice questions that are to be completed within 1 hour. Paper 1 occupies 33% of the overall grade.

Paper 2: Structured Questions

Paper 2 requires students to select two out of three 20-mark structured questions. These questions assesses the ability of students to integrate their knowledge and comprehension of Physics. Paper 2 is to be completed within 2 hours and it occupies 67% of the overall grade.
